The Ilmattares, or Irma immet, are divine maidens living in the sky appearing in Kalevala folklore. Ilmatar and ilm impi resemble the Northern maidens, because they also sit in the sky from time to time. Without air, the impi is sometimes also mentioned as narrow and natural.

In the Kalevala compiled on the basis of folk poetry, Ilmatar is associated with the birth of Väinämöinen and the world. Ilmatar gets bored of being in the sky and lands on the back of the sea. The wind impregnates him. Sotka is looking for a nesting place and notices Ilmattare's knee, where it makes a nest and lays its eggs. The knee starts to heat up and Ilmatar swings it, causing the eggs to fall and break. The world is born from broken eggshells.
