Väinämöinen and Joukahainen
Väinämöinen lived in Väinölä. He gained a reputation as a skilled singer and a wise man. Joukahainen, who lives in Pohjola, heard about Väinämöinen's reputation and became jealous. In his own opinion, he was wiser.
It is said about Väinämöien:
Elelevi of its time
In those fields of Väinölä,
With Kalevala fabrics.
He sang his hymns.
A message heard from far away,
From Väinämöinen's singing,
Uroho as a whole.
Got the news from Pohjolahan.
Was young Joukahainen,
A skinny boy from Lapland.
It visited the village once;
Heard strange words
In those Väinölä fields.
That made everything very bad
It's all about time
From Väinämö to a singer
To better himself.
In Pohjola, Joukahainen harnessed a fiery gelding in front of a golden sled. He drove for three days until he reached Väinölä. Väinämöinen came over. The road was so narrow that the hoofs of the sledges got stuck together. Väinämöinen blamed that the collision was caused by Joukahainen's carelessness.
Young Joukahainen came
Drove on the road of resistance;
Caught a cock's head,
Länget intervened in the links.
Old Väinämöinen asked:
As you are related,
When you came forward naughty,
Unreservedly, right?
Joukahainen started bragging about his knowledge and skills and wanted to compete. Whoever is wiser, gets to drive along the road and the other one dodges into the ditch.
Which one is better by far,
Greater in memory,
Sep' is standing still on the road,
Move out of the way.
Joukahainen starts singing about his knowledge. He has information about animals, for example the spawning times of pike and perch. He also knows geography, knows the three largest rapids in Finland and knows how to list birds, other animals and metals. According to Väinämöinen, Joukahainen's information is limited.
The pike spawned in the frost,
Perch's timid, crooked neck
Autumn swam deep,
Spawned in dry summers
Rapsehtivi on the beach.
Three is a touch hard
Under this air cover:
Hämehess' is Hälläpyörä,
Kaatrakoski in Karelia;
Vuoksi has not won
Over visited Imatra.
Said old Väinämöinen:
A child's knowledge, a woman's memory!
Say born deep,
Things only!
