The devil's bell, also known as Guardian® Bell, spirit bell, gremlin bell or biker bell, is a decorative metal bell that is attached under a motorcycle. It is often given as a gift to wish for good luck while driving.
The bell is usually about 25 mm long, made of linen or other metals, and serves as a good luck charm or symbolic protection to ward off bad luck while riding a motorcycle.
A gremlin is a known prankster creature in folklore that was used to depict malfunctions in aircraft canisters during World War II and later in other aircraft. The "Guardian Bell" or "Gremlin Bell" was sometimes used by British and American pilots during World War II to ward off "gremlins". When American veterans returned home after the war, many of them continued to ride motorcycles and began to use the watch as protection while riding.
This tradition is still in use among some motorcyclists today, especially among riders of Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycles.
