The Ilmattares, or Irma immet, are divine maidens living in the sky appearing in Kalevala folklore. Ilmatar and ilm impi resemble the Northern maidens, because they also sit in the sky from time to time. Without air, the impi is sometimes also mentioned as narrow and natural.
In the Kalevala compiled on the basis of folk poetry, Ilmatar is associated with the birth of Väinämöinen and the world. Ilmatar gets bored of being in the sky and lands on the back of the sea.
